31) Question: I am pursuing CFA so i want to know scope of cfa and placements, is it valid and good just like ca or cs, can we get good job only by doing CFA. B, coz some people say that this not good like ca.

(Rizwan)

Mentor Opinion: (By Pranay Kumar)
It’s an excellent program. It has no comparison with CA or CS as each one of them has their own areas of focus and specialization. I understand that you must have chosen a CFA because of your interest in Investment Industry. Therefore, CFA is the right program to give you a boost to your career. However, participating in FATP will be certainly an added advantage for you.

32) Question: I have just joined CFA course, my prior experience in insurance sales since 9 years. How this CFA would be helpful in my career enhancement. Kindly suggest.

(Prasan Mathur)

Mentor Opinion: (By Pranay Kumar)
Since you have a good experience in sales, the CFA qualification would give you a good insight into the financial services sector and a good exposure in Banking and Finance industry. This knowledge will give you an edge over others in terms of analytical mind and sound fundamentals for achieving higher roles.

33) Question: I have 2 yrs experience in accountancy, how CFA from ICFAI University is in your opinion can help to get me a good Finance based job abroad.

(Rakesh kumar)

Mentor Opinion: (By Subash Chandra Misra)
You have not mentioned whether you are a qualified CA or not. Anyway, you must have already seen in the market place that qualification is a basic perquisite for a professional job in finance or accountancy. A CFA from ICFAI University will make you primarily eligible for a job in finance industry. But that does not assure anybody of a job. Just as a graduation will make you eligible to appear for IAS but it does not assure you to get into IAS. Similarly, you have to show your competence during the screening and interview after becoming a CFA where many other traits are verified. Having said this, I will strongly recommend you to have a degree in finance like CFA to go places in your life. I wish you all the best.

34) Question: I would like to pursue CFA program, could you please guide me how this will help me to make a carrier in corporate finance. Presently working with MNC Company as a Senior Accountant.

It will equip you with tools and techniques to work in various fields of Finance including Corporate Finance.CFA coupled with your experience will take you to new heights.
All The Best for your future!!!

35) Question: I have cleared CFA on 2010.I have done my M.A (A&A ECO) in 2004.I have worked for 3 years from 2005 to 2009 as commodity dealer. Now I am confused as to which field I should pursue my career?

(Rekha Mohanty)

Mentor Opinion: (By Manish Pandey)
I will first like to congratulate you for having cleared the CFA exams this year. Being a master in economics and having a CFA degree is a good combination for a career in the financial services industry. You can opt to get into sales, advisory or research services based on your inclination towards the domain. Moreover getting into the banking industry is also a good option. Since you have decent experience in the commodities market, I would advise you to look for better opportunities in the same field. Paradoxical as it may seem, the recent global phenomenon of financial meltdown which spread like a fire in the woods, offers in reality new challenges and opportunities to economies like India. And the commodity market is all set to grow in the backdrop of this expected development. Anyone who sticks to this market can go a long way in making a difference. Many noted think-tanks are busy in designing the blueprints for India’s transition to a developed market. And I am sure it will be not an easy job for them to do it without a significant contribution from the commodities market. I wish you all the Best towards a bright and successful future.

Congratulations for successfully completing the CFA.Welcome to the fraternity.
Since you are already having 6 years of experience in a field which is closely related to the field of core finance, and your professional qualification as a CFA, will present you as a very strong candidate for your chosen field.
You can look for the job mailers sent by the Alumni Relations and apply. You may choose to work as a "Financial/Credit Analyst" in banking/finance sector. It may be with Banks, NBFCs, Insurance Companies, Mutual Funds, Share Brokers, Investment Companies, Financial Advisor Companies, etc, where you will be responsible for detailed analysis of the corporates based on financials, business, management, future outlook, market dynamics and industry analysis. In the bank you have options of working in a number of departments, like Credit, Corporate Banking, Finance, etc. You may also explore opportunities of working with the corporates in their finance department, where you will responsible for preparing financials, presenting it in a suitable way by complying with all the relevant guidelines, liasing with the banks and various stakeholders.

38) Question: Please advise me whether it is worth to do CFA from ICFAI University. Tell me about the expected salary i may get after doing CFA and also let me know companies providing employment to a CFA.

(Nitish parwal)

Mentor Opinion: (By Abhijit Dutta)
Regarding your first query, I'd like to say, it’s definitely worthwhile to pursue the CFA from ICFAI University. But it would have been easier for me to address your query in-depth, if you had elaborated it a little further.
Regarding your query on the expected salary, I'd like to suggest you to get in touch with the placement cell of the institute, which is in a much better position to throw light in that regard.
Finally, regarding the query on the companies providing placements to the CFAs, I'd again suggest you to get in touch with the placement cell of the institute, to get a clear picture. But at the same time , I think, if you notice the list of Alumni mentors and the list of the Financial Experts, probably, you can get a fair idea of the companies recruiting the CFAs from ICFAI University and the kind of worth the CFAs are getting there.

39) Question: I am a qualified Company Secretary pursuing CFA (group C) from ICFAI University. Is CS and CFA a good combination?

(Nitin Lavania)

Mentor Opinion: (By Ashwini Kumar)
A combination of CS and CFA is very good for making career with the corporates in finance department, where knowledge related to fields, corporate laws/regulations and financial analysis is required. Knowledge related to both the fields will help you in moving up the ladder in the finance department of any company, as you will be responsible for managing a combination of work. Alternatively, you can choose to join any financial organization in the role, where analytical as well as laws/regulations/ compliance related knowledge/skill set is required. You can also join in a role, where initially knowledge of only one area is required, as in future you will be in a better position to take wider responsibility due to your skill sets, which will ultimately help you in growing faster in the organization.

40) Question: Is it prudent to quit my job and concentrate on the CFA course.

(Raul Almeida)

Mentor Opinion: (By K V Shantaram)
It would not be prudent decision to leave your current job to pursue your current studies. The Job experience would provide you a higher leverage once you complete your studies. Let your studies get delayed by another quarter, but hold on to your job and get around the issues on hand through the time and event management. It would have been more helpful if you had helped with me information about your current job profile.
All the best!!!

41) Question: I would like to know how cost of equity is calculated in practice in DCF valuation. Whether CAPM is accepted or any other model is preferred?

(Biswarup Chakraborty)

Mentor Opinion: (By J B Ram)
As you might have rightly guessed, in practice for calculation of cost of equity for DCF, the bedrock for calculation is CAPM. The challenge is to apply the knowledge in the books to practice.
You may have wondered how base interest rates set by central bank on sovereign debt or bank rates affect the equity prices in the security market. Or, how the increases in these rates effect the long term viability of infrastructure projects/ any project. To bring it to more closure to home, the question to answer is how the sovereign debt crisis at Greece has effected the Discounted Cash Flow of private sector of a hypothetical company in Greece. The answer is through CAPM, through the channel of risk free interest rate.
I have also annexed an illustrative example to elaborate the point which could be pertaining to your question. Please also consult research reports of leading brokers on DCF valuation for better clarity on the subject.
